Geocache Description:

War Memorial #1812 ~ St John's - Redhill

The Memorial

The aftermath of the First World War saw the biggest single wave of public commemoration ever with tens of thousands of memorials erected across England. This was the result of both the huge impact on communities of the loss of three quarters of a million British lives, and also the official policy of not repatriating the dead: therefore the memorials provided the main focus of the grief felt at this great loss. One such memorial was raised to the east of the Church of St John, Redhill as a permanent testament to the sacrifice made by the members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War.

The memorial at the Church of St John, Redhill was designed in 1919 by Frank Loughborough Pearson. Unveiled in May 1920, it was altered after 1945. The church of St John had been largely rebuilt by Pearson's father, John Loughborough Pearson between 1889 and 1895. Frank Pearson added the vestry in 1899, immediately behind the war memorial. The memorial takes the form of a carved Northampton stone monument with a plinth, base and shaft supporting a lantern head.

As well as the fine memorial, there's also a Commonwealth Grave here at St Johns, the resting place of a member of the armed forces who lost his life in the first world war.

The Cache

The cache is NOT at the published coordinates, which is the location of the memorial.

Start at the Memorial itself (the published coordinates), and you need to answer the following from the engraving on the the front of the memorial

A = number of letters in the last word of the first line

B = number of letters in the last word on the engraving (not numbers)

Then, visit the Commonwealth Grave in the graveyard nearby, its only 30m or so away. There's a waypoint to help you. You are looking for a rectangular plaque on the ground, with an engraved cross. There may well be poppies on the grave too.

When you have found it, answer the following:

C = The number of letters in the last word of the first line

D = number of vowels on the third line

The cache is a short walk away (about 500m) at this location

N51 13.C (C-D) (A x 2) W000 10. A (B-A) (A+D)

There is a small field puzzle element to the final cache - please be gentle with the cache. The bottom unscrews anti clockwise (as youd expect), and may be a little stiff. Replace as found please, making sure it's fully tightened. Much appreciated!
