Wivenhoe station was opened in 1863 by the Tendring Hundred Railway Co. a branch of the Great Eastern Railway, on the line between London Liverpool Street Station and Clacton-on-Sea.
A few hundred metres east of the station there was a junction for the single-track branch line to Brightlingsea. This branch was opened in 1866 and closed as part of the Beeching cuts in 1964 and the tracks lifted. A bridge over Alresford Creek was also later demolished.
The station is currently managed by Greater Anglia which also operates all trains serving the station.
The cache is not placed on Network Rail property, but just outside the boundaries. A suprisingly busy spot so stealth will be required. You are looking for a camo bison, cable tied in place.
