About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found on the SideTracked Series website at www.sidetrackedseries.info https://www.sidetrackedseries.info This event is one of many throughout the country this week celebrating the 15th anniversary of the Sidetracked series.

About SideTracked Events

Every year in the UK, SideTracked Events have been held on 10th August (SideTracked Day) to celebrate the series... and this year is the 15th Anniversary. In previous years, special Souvenirs have been issued to attendees of anniversary events... and this will be no different.

About This Event

A chance to catch up and celebrate the Sidetracked 15th anniversary at the site of Culter station. 9th August 2022 1100-1130

The first single platformed station was opened in 1853 and stood to the west of the replacement provided at the track doubling of 1892. The goods yard lay to the east and was approached from that end and remained after the new station that was opened close to the ruins of St Peter's Chapel. A short line ran to the Culter Paper Mill and the town developed around this site. The line west towards Park from the new station site was not doubled until 1899.

The Deeside branch at first was operated by the Deeside Railway. The line became part of the Great North of Scotland Railway and at grouping merged with the London and North Eastern Railway. It stood 7.5 miles from Aberdeen Joint and 43.25 miles from Ballater. It was closed to passengers on 28 February 1966. The line has been lifted and sections form part of the Deeside Way long-distance footpath.

Sadly, there's no refreshment room or buffet car, but Neil Selbie & Co Coffee Shop is a short walk away, up Station Brae on North Deeside Road, if folk fancy a cuppa after the event! (It's dog friendly)
