Geocache Description:

01 July 2022, 16:00 - 17:00

Something a bit different this year for War Memorial Day. The War Memorial series is a national themed series of geocaches placed close to War Memorials. This series was started on 1st July 2014 and on 1st July 2018 they started doing unofficial souvenirs for whoever finds a War Memorial cache or attends a W.M. event every year on it's birthday. If anyone would like to expand to this series please do, we would just ask that you could let Just-us-Two know first at justustwo1013@gmail.com so they can keep track of the memorial numbers and names to avoid any duplication.
We will remember them!

Corporal Thomas Peck Hunter (V.C.)

Born 6th October 1923 in Aldershot, England

Died 3rd April 1945 in Lake Comacchio, Italy

The memorial you see here is the Royal Marines 43rd Commando Memorial. It's dedicated to Corporal Thomas Peck Hunter, who was the only Royal marine to have received a Victoria Cross (V.C.) during World War 2. He was only 21 years old when he died during the course of Operation ROAST in Lake Commacchio, Italy. He was killed while offering himself as a target to try and save his Troop and proceeded to charge his enemy with a Bren gun across 200 yards of open ground towards the gun enplacements whilst holding off enemy fire and protecting his fellow brothers in arms before the enemy fled. He died, firing accurately to the last during this. His V.C. was presented to his parents by King George VI during a private ceremony on Sept 1945 and was later donated to the Roayl Marines Museum in Southsea, where all 10 Royal Marines V.C.'s are securely stored, the medal being on display there being a copy. The memorial you see here was unveiled in 2002.

Anyway, back to the event!

Where: At The Royal Marines 43rd Commando War Memorial, near Ocean Terminal

When: Friday 1st July at 4pm till 5pm (maybe later depending on weather and if anyone wants to stick around)

I'll be at the above memorial for an hour, and will bring along a few spare trackables if anyone wants to pick them up, or just to pop along and have a chat, or even share tips on caches - the more the merrier! :) There is parking nearby for the Ocean Terminal shopping centre, but I think there's a charge for that. There are also plenty of local buses that can get you to Ocean Terminal as well as plenty of food places inside there if anyone needs a bte to eat before coming along to the event.

See you there!
