Come along for some geochat and drinks in a pub located in historic Woolwich, which has many royal connections.
In 1513 Henry VIII founded a dockyard here, in order to build the royal ship Henri Grace à Dieu, popularly known as the ‘Great Harry’. Elizabeth I came to Woolwich in 1559 to mark the launch of her ship Elizabeth Jonas. The Kings Troop (named for King George VI) are based at the Royal Artillery Barracks. Elizabeth II visited Woolwich Barracks in 2013, and now you can reach this area via the brand new Elizabeth Line (previously known as Crossrail) which is named after Her Majesty, and opens to the travelling public TODAY.
The pub the Event is being held in also has historic interest, as it is housed in a Grade 2 listed building which was formerly a munitions building. The brick warehouse is fronted by two pillars, each supporting a pyramid of cannonballs, and a magnificent sundial dated 1764, hence the pub name. The pub is wheelchair accessible, and is family and dog friendly. It serves food all day. We have booked an area in the pub to the left of the main door (though if it is a sunny evening, we may venture outside instead). Look out for trackables on the tables.
There are plenty of public transport options, all within 5 mintues walk: Woolwich station (Elizabeth line), Woolwich Arsenal station (Docklands, and main line), and a large bus transport hub. Parking for cars may be more of a problem.
We look forward to seeing you there.
