Queen’s Gardens Boer War Memorial
Record numbers of mourners attended the service to mark the anniversary of the battle at Pieter's Hill on February 27, 1900.
The battle was made famous for the successful work carried out by the South Lancashire Regiment.
The charge was led by Lt Colonel McCarthy O'Leary, whose statue stands in Queen's Gardens. He commanded the 1st battalion when it left Preston for South Africa to take part in the Boer War.
The colonel died along with four members of the regiment during the victorious battle that has gone down in regiment folklore.
As he led the charge, he said: "Remember men, the eyes of Lancashire are watching over you."
The monument honouring Col O'Leary was erected and unveiled back in 1907 and numerous commemoration parades have been held since.
