Kurzeme is historical region of both Latvia and Old Livonia. In its center is the charming small town of Kuldiga. Kuldiga is the oldest and most beautiful town in Kurzeme. Among other things, it was the first capital of the Duchy of Kurzeme. During the reign of Duke Jacob, who ruled in the middle of the 17th century, Kurzeme became such a strong maritime state that it even acquired colonies, for example in Africa and the West Indies. Only since 1918, when the Republic of Latvia was declared, Kurzeme has been a part of Latvia. At one time, Ruhnu island also belonged to Kurzeme diocese.
In 1242, under the leadership of Dietrich von Grüningen, the land master of the Livonian branch of the Teutonic Order, a new fort was started to be built on the left bank of the Venta river in place of the former burned down wooden fort. It was completed in 1245; in the future, a settlement and a small town developed around it. In 1368, Kuldīga was included in the Hanseatic League.

Kurzeme ir gan Latvijas, gan Vecās Livonijas vēsturiskais novads. Tās centrā atrodas burvīgā mazpilsēta Kuldīga. Kuldīga ir vecākā un skaistākā Kurzemes pilsēta. Cita starpā tā bija pirmā Kurzemes hercogistes galvaspilsēta. 17. gadsimta vidū valdošā hercoga Jēkaba laikā Kurzeme kļuva par tik spēcīgu jūras valsti, ka ieguva pat kolonijas, piemēram, Āfrikā un Rietumindijā. Tikai kopš 1918. gada, kad tika pasludināta Latvijas Republika, Kurzeme ir Latvijas sastāvdaļa. Savulaik arī Rūnu sala piederēja Kuramas diecēzei. 1242. gadā Vācu ordeņa Livonijas atzara zemes mestra Dītriha fon Grīningena vadībā Ventas upes kreisajā krastā agrākā nodegusī koka forta vietā sāka celt jaunu fortu. Tas tika pabeigts 1245. gadā; nākotnē ap to izveidojās apdzīvota vieta un mazpilsēta. 1368. gadā Kuldīgu iekļāva Hanzas savienībā. Sarkani akmens jumti, haotiskas ielas, aizsargājama vecpilsēta. Turklāt Kuldīgā ir kas tāds, ko nevar atrast citās šādās pilsētās ne Latvijā, ne citur Eiropā. Tā ir ļoti daudzveidīga dabas vide gan pilsētā, gan ap to. Starp mājām ir kanāli kā Venēcijā! Viss ir mazākā mērogā, bet vēl jo simpātiskāk. Noliecoties pāri margām un vērojot, kā ūdens šalko starp pamatiem. Visi šie ūdeņi kopā ieplūst Ventā. Virs tā troņojas Kuldīgas simbols - majestātisks sarkano ķieģeļu tilts no industriālās revolūcijas laikiem (1874), kas kopā ar platāko ūdenskritumu Eiropā (249m) ir pilsētas orientieris un ikona. Pilsētas galvenā iela ir Liepājas iela un tā ir paredzēta gājējiem. Tur pastaigājoties, var gūt priekšstatu par visdažādākajiem arhitektūras stiliem no 17. līdz 20. gadsimtam.
