Das Schloss St. Emmeram der fürstlichen Familie Thurn und Taxis in Regensburg ist aus einem ehemaligen Benediktinerkloster aus dem 8. Jahrhundert entstanden. Nach dem Ende des Heiligen Römischen Reiches Deutscher Nation im Jahr 1808 verloren die Thurn und Taxis das Amt des Prinzipalkommissars und das des Generalpostmeisters. Für den Verlust wurden sie vom Königreich Bayern mit Immobilien entschädigt. Darunter befanden sich auch die ungenutzten Stiftsgebäude von St. Emmeram.
The St. Emmeram Castle of the princely Thurn and Taxis family in Regensburg was created from a former Benedictine monastery from the 8th century. After the end of the Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation in 1808, the Thurn und Taxis lost the posts of principal commissioner and postmaster general. They were compensated for the loss with real estate by the Kingdom of Bavaria. Among them were the unused monastery buildings of St. Emmeram.
Das ehemalige Kloster wurde ab 1812 zur Hauptresidenz des Fürstenhauses ausgebaut. Es zählt zu den größten privaten Schlössern in ganz Europa. Das Schloss St. Emmeram ist heute noch der Wohnsitz der Familie und beherbergt die fürstliche Verwaltung so wie die fürstlichen Museen.
From 1812, the former monastery was expanded into the main residence of the princely family. It is one of the largest private castles in all of Europe. St. Emmeram Castle is still the family residence today and houses the royal administration as well as the royal museums.
