Geocache Description:

From this location you can geet a glimpse of the disused station entrance. This was one of two stations built to serve the Great Exhibition building (the Crystal Palace) when it was moved here from Hyde Park after 1851. Major engineering works were required to excavate the station into the ridge below the Crystal Palace Parade. After the Crystal Palace was destroyed by fire in 1936 the numbers using the line declined and it was temporarily closed after bomb damage during World War II. Temporary repairs were made and the line reopened but heavy construction work was still required so the decision was taken to close the branch and the station in 1954. The retaining walls below the Parade and the opening of the Paxton Tunnel to the north are still visible. The ornate subway still exists (although it is sealed off) and is a Grade II listed building. The Friends of Crystal Palce Subway occasionally open it for visits.
