Geocache Description:

Number 1644 in a series of caches where a red telephone box is in close proximity to a post box.

The only rules are that they have to be able to be photographed together, be not more than 100’ apart and the phone boxes have to be red.

This fine pair sits outside what used to be St James the Great, also known as the Red Church, for obvious reasons. Built in the 1840s, this church had some interesting connections through the years. Reverend Coke, an early vicar, was dismayed at the number of unmarried co-habitating couples in his parrish. This was blamed on the high marringe fees so Rev Coke instituted free weddings, and soon was marrying around 1500 couples each year. One hundred years later, one of the most notable weddings was that of Frances Shea and Reggie Kray (of the Kray Twins) in April 1965.

According to one source, former PM Clement Attlee was connected to this church. That's possible, since he was active in social work in the area before and after WWI and later as mayor of Stepney
