Mežtakas 14. posms gājēju aizved līdz Igaunijas pierobežai un vienai no mazākajām pilsētām Latvijā – Apei. Pilsēta dibināta 1928. gadā, un cauri laikiem tā ir attīstījusies, taču vēstures pieskāriens tajā spilgti jūtams arī šodien. Īpaši izceļams Apes vēsturiskais centrs, kas ievērojams ar dolomīta ēku apbūvi un Pasta ielas bruģi 200 m garumā, kas ieklāts ap 1930. gadu. Vienlaikus ar dolomīta ēkām, šeit redzamas arī vēsturiskas ķieģeļu un koka celtnes, daļai no tām saglabājušās un atjaunotas tā sauktās “vēja spāres” – koka elementi jumtu konstrukcijās.
Ape ir arī viena no pilsētām, kuru kādreiz šķērsojusi šaursliežu dzelzceļa līnija, savienojot Api ar Valku. Šodien par šo vēstures faktu liecina izveidotie tūrisma maršruti pa vecajām šaursliežu dzelzceļa līnijām Vidzemē – Zaļie dzelzceļi.

Mežtakas Ziemeļu daļas posmā no Vecrīgas līdz Igaunijas robežai, kurš izstrādāts ar Eiropas Reģionālās attīstības fonda Centrālā Baltijas jūras reģiona pārrobežu sadarbības programmas 2014.–2020. gadam finansiālu atbalstu, izvietoti 45 slēpņi. Iesakām apvienot slēpņu meklēšanu ar pastaigu pa kādu no 15 ainaviskajiem Mežtakas Ziemeļu daļas posmiem.

Description of the place:
The 14th section of the Forest Trail takes hikers to the Estonian border and one of the smallest towns in Latvia — Ape. Founded in 1928, the town has evolved over the years, but the touch of history is still evident today. The historic centre of Ape is particularly notable for its dolomite buildings and the 200 m long pavement of Pasta Street, laid around 1930. Alongside the dolomite buildings, there are also historic brick and timber buildings, some of which have preserved and restored the so-called “wind rafters” — wooden elements in the roof structures.
Ape is also one of the towns once crossed by a narrow-gauge railway line connecting Ape with Valka. Today, this history is reflected in the tourist routes along the old narrow-gauge railway lines in Vidzeme — the Green Railways (Zaļie dzelzceļi).

The cache is a part of the “The Forest Trail” cache series. The Forest Trail is a part of the European long-distance hiking route E11 in the Baltic States, which leads through the most beautiful forests and national parks of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The project, which has been developed with the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020, includes 45 cache places in the northern part of the Forest Trail from Old Riga to the Estonian border. We recommend combining cache hunting with a walk along one of the 15 scenic sections of the northern part of the Forest Trail.
