Viens no nedaudzajiem pieturas punktiem Mežtakas skrējienā pa citādi mazapdzīvoto Ziemeļgaujas mežaini ir Strenči. Vai zini, kāds ir Strenču pilsētas ģerbonis un ar ko šī pilsēta īpaša? Zilais ģerboņa fons simbolizē Gauju, četras horizontālās zelta svītras simbolizē pa Gauju pludinātos kokus, bet trīs zelta rombi – caur Strenčiem ejošo dzelzceļu. Strenču attīstība sākās 18. gs. otrajā pusē, kad šeit, uz muižu zemēm, sāk apmesties mežcirtēji un plostnieki. Par nozīmīgu apdzīvoto vietu Strenči sāk veidoties pēc Strenču stacijas atklāšanas 1889. gadā dzelzceļa līnijā Rīga–Pleskava (caur Valku). Šobrīd Strenči sevi dēvē par plostnieku galvaspilsētu, un turpina saglabāt seno plostniecības amatu kā kultūrvēsturisko mantojumu.

Mežtaka ir Eiropas garās distances pārgājienu maršruta E11 daļa Baltijas valstīs, kas ved cauri Latvijas, Lietuvas un Igaunijas skaistākajiem mežiem un nacionālajiem parkiem. Mežtakas Ziemeļu daļas posmā no Vecrīgas līdz Igaunijas robežai, kurš izstrādāts ar Eiropas Reģionālās attīstības fonda Centrālā Baltijas jūras reģiona pārrobežu sadarbības programmas 2014.–2020. gadam finansiālu atbalstu, izvietoti 45 slēpņi. Iesakām apvienot slēpņu meklēšanu ar pastaigu pa kādu no 15 ainaviskajiem Mežtakas Ziemeļu daļas posmiem.

Description of the place:
One of the few stops on the Forest Trail run through the otherwise sparsely populated forests in the Northern Gauja is Strenči. Do you know what the coat of arms of Strenči is and what makes this town special? The blue background of the coat of arms symbolises the River Gauja, the four horizontal golden stripes symbolise the trees floating on the Gauja River, and the three golden diamonds symbolise the railway passing through Strenči. The development of Strenči began in the second half of the 18th century, when loggers and raftsmen started to settle on the estate lands. Strenči started to develop into an important settlement after the opening of Strenči station in 1889 on the Riga-Pleskava (via Valka) railway line. Today, Strenči calls itself the rafting capital and continues to preserve the ancient craft of rafting as a cultural heritage.

The cache is a part of the “The Forest Trail” cache series. The Forest Trail is a part of the European long-distance hiking route E11 in the Baltic States, which leads through the most beautiful forests and national parks of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The project, which has been developed with the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020, includes 45 cache places in the northern part of the Forest Trail from Old Riga to the Estonian border. We recommend combining cache hunting with a walk along one of the 15 scenic sections of the northern part of the Forest Trail.
