Geocache Description:

Īss citāts no svaiga raksta avīzē Diena:

Interesanti, ka alejas kartēšanas laikā te piefiksēti 56 dobumaini koki, taču slēpnis neatrodas kādā no alejas kokiem, bet gan blakus esošakjā tūjā.

[EN] Certainly, most of us have driven along the road between Ventspils and Kuldīga at some point, but have you ever turned off onto the road to Zūras? Here awaits Latvia's longest double avenue. The avenue can be divided into two parts, the first part is a linden double avenue, sometimes supplemented with ash trees and horse chestnuts, while approaching the manor, the second part of the avenue is significantly shorter, mainly with horse chestnuts. As befits a proper avenue, during the inspection, three specially protected invertebrate species were found here - the park longhorn beetle, the splendid click beetle, and the oak longhorn beetle - as well as one moss species - the pleurostigma cup moss.

The manor itself was built in the mid-19th century, and the manor complex includes a stable, a granary, a barn, and a servant's house. During the Soviet era, as usual, there was an agricultural school, and now the manor and its surrounding territory are privately owned, and it is not possible to enter inside, but it is definitely worth walking around and admiring from the outside, as well as throwing a glance of honor at the manor's main door!

A short quote from a fresh article in Diena newspaper:

"Driving along the double row of linden trees, the view opens up to Count Lamsdorfs manor, where there used to be the Zūra agricultural school with more than 200 students and a large farm. The beautiful birch grove, planted in 1936 in honor of Ulmanis and Balodis, was destroyed in 1940, when the Russians entered."

An enthusiast of historical research says that the Agricultural school was closed in 1997 because the parish government was too poor to maintain the large manor with its rundown infrastructure. The property was privatized and after various twists and turns, it was purchased by a Swiss citizen.

Interestingly, during the mapping of the alley, 56 hollow trees were recorded here, but the cache is not located in any of the trees in the alley, but rather in the nearby thuja.
