About Redhill Station
Redhill station began its days in conflict. The two main-line railways leaving London in a southwards direction, the L&BR (London and Brighton Railway) and the SER (South Eastern Railway), had, by parliamentary decree, to use the same route from London to Redhill. The inevitable conflict led to the building by the L&BR of the Quarry Line avoiding Redhill, still used by fast trains. Consequently, few trains on the Brighton Main Line call here. There were originally two stations at separate sites in the area that had "Redhill" in their name. First to open was the L&BR Redhill and Reigate Road in 1841, followed by the SER's Redhill in 1842. L&BR promptly renamed its station "Redhill". The SER closed its station two years later. The present Redhill station is the SER's second station which opened in 1858. It was originally named Red Hill Junction, only changing its name to Redhill in 1929. As for the other Redhill station, it changed its name to Reigate in 1843 before closing in 1844.
Most recently, in 2018 a new Platform 0 was opened, aiming to ease congestion on the usual London-bound platform 1.
About the cache
The previous SideTracked cache here dates back to 2008 before being archived in 2021. The rules for placing caches on Network Rail property have changed considerably since 2008, meaning this cache is a few minutes walk south of the station. Perfect if you're changing trains and have time to kill - it took me less than three minutes to walk from the main concourse to GZ.
There's nothing too fancy here - a quick find for a weary traveller. The container does have a small field puzzle element, which should make it more memorable than the standard filmpot. Also the hint makes the hide very easy - why not have a go without the hint and only use it if you get stuck?
The cache is NOT on the fence and there's no need to cross any fences to find the cache. Please use stealth as the road and path adjacent is often busy - and watch out for bikes as GZ is on the National Cycle Route 21. Tweezers recommended. Please be gentle with the cache, and replace exactly as found, again using stealth so we can keep the secret !
