Geocache Description:

War Memorial, North Hykeham

Built in 1910 on land farmed by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, the Memorial Hall originated with the "Tin Tabernacle" Clubroom and Institute of the Hykeham Rifle Club.

The Rifle Club was dissolved in World War I and in 1921 the Ecclesiastical Commissioners sold the Rifle field and Institute for £415-5s to the War Memorial Hall and Recreation Ground Trust. These consisted of 21 Hykehamites who had raised the money by public subscription to commemorate Hykehams war dead following an overwhelming parish vote for a Memorial Hall in February 1919.

The Trust refurbished it and deemed its use to the Hykeham Sports Club of 1926 and to groups such as Hykeham Operatic Society, whose performances were all held there. The onset of the Great Depression meant financing it was a real problem, several Trust members died, and in 1938 the management was transferred to the Parish Council only to have the premises requisitioned by the Army during World War II. The military built a large brick barrack block there. Derequisition followed in October 1945 and in January 1948 the brick hut was dismantled and sold for £30 to a Mr Toyne.

In 1968 a new group, the Playing Fields Association, was created and given responsibility. Extra land was purchased and a new Memorial Hall with modern facilities (including Council Chambers, Council Offices, Kitchen, Bar and Hall) was opened in 1969. This hosted both Parish and Town Council but in 1995 a new Trust had to be created to administer it when it was discovered that the 1938 transfer had been inappropriate since the original Trust had not been legally expunged. The Council transferred to Witham Fields in May 2006.

Today, the North Hykeham War Memorial Trust, a registered charity, is responsible for all of the facilities which comprises the Memorial Hall, which is used primarily as a vibrant and busy Community Centre, a members only Sports & Social Club, cricket, football and rugby pitches and a popular bowls club.
