Description of the place: The beginning of the 7th section of the Forest Trail Cēsis-Caunītes meanders along the Gauja through the forests of the Cēsis outskirts. Surrounded by the forests you can find the “Siļķes” (transl. from Latvian: Herrings) — the 200-year-old family house of sculptors Jansons. In Hanseatic times, it was a wharf and a cargo handling point. As a result of the goods brought by traders, the medieval menu changed considerably, and salted herrings became popular as well. Maybe that is why the house is called like that? The Jansons Family House, a studio and sculpture garden, currently displays sculptures created by three generations of great artists, as well as gives an opportunity to watch the artist Matiass Jansons in action. The best-known work by Matiass Jansons is the sculpture “Gadsimtiem ejot” (“Through the Centuries”) — a night watchman with a lantern who is greeting passers-by at the Cēsis St. John’s Church.

The cache is a part of the “The Forest Trail” cache series. The Forest Trail is a part of the European long-distance hiking route E11 in the Baltic States, which leads through the most beautiful forests and national parks of Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia. The project, which has been developed with the financial support of the European Regional Development Fund Central Baltic Programme 2014-2020, includes 45 cache places in the northern part of the Forest Trail from Old Riga to the Estonian border. We recommend combining cache hunting with a walk along with one of the 15 scenic sections of the northern part of the Forest Trail.
