Geocache Description:

The cache is not at the stated coordintes, but you will have to visit them in order to find the information needed to find the cache location.

Farnley War memorial was erected c1920. It is has been created out of Portland stone and sits on a square base. It is approximately 4m high, and has a stepped and tapering shaft (cenotaph like ) with rectangular panels carrying inscriptions and figures in relief. The upper block has a relief of a female holding a baby. The lower tablet lists the men of Farnley killed in The First World War. The right hand side of the memorial has an upper block with a relief of a sailor with the name Shires carved above it. The lower tablet also lists the men of Farnley who were killed in The First World War.  Private Shires was an injured soldier who died shortly after the conflict. On the front of the memorial is a tablet with the dedication to those that were killed in The First World War. Immediately below this is a second table which lists those men of Farnley who were killed in The Second World War.

No specific information remains of the part that all those named on this memorial played during the two World Wars, except to the relatives. There is however an interesting on line record relating to a Sailor by the name of Jack Ramsden. His name can be seen ten places from the bottom of the list on the World War Two table.

We will never know if Jack Ramsden knew the history of the SS Rajputana, the ship he was serving on, a ship that was built in 1925 on the River Clyde in Scotland. Much of its interior design was done by Elsie Mackay, a famous actress of the day who died whilst trying to fly across the Atlantic. Lawrence of Arabia and Mahatma Gandhi were known to have been passengers on the ship during its service before the war.

By December 1939 the Navy, which had requisitioned the ship, renamed her HMS Rajputana and fitted her out for convoy duty as an armed merchant cruiser in the North Atlantic.

Unfortunately for Jack, Klaus Scholtz (who went on to sink 25 ships during the war) and was the Commander U-108, was in the area where the Rajputana happened to be escorting merchant ships. It was his second patrol and when he came across HMS Rajputana he was determined to not let her get away.

This is the radio message he sent when he sighted HMS Rajputana.

“Radiogram to Befehlshaber der Unterseeboote (Eng: Commander of the U-boats) (BdU) . Reached operational area on Thursday 10 April; Saturday 12 April armed merchant cruiser in sight. First attack one torpedo, failure firing. Second attack: double shot. Enemy zigzagging. Pursuit to the edge of the ice. Attack terminated by darkness. 13 April sighted and attacked armed merchant cruiser. Triple shot. Two hits, one torpedo failure. Armed merchant cruiser stopped. Coup de grace. Enemy sunk. At sinking position two destroyers and a Sunderland (aircraft). Name of the armed merchant cruiser ‘Rajputana’.”

The BdU answered a half hour later:

“Well done. Express acknowledgment to commander and crew. Return to base. Dönitz.”

Jack Ramsden, along with 41 other men, lost his life that day–13 April

1941.
