You may have heard of the Hula-Hoop Lady of Ward's Corner. Pamela Brown was hit by a truck on the day of her high school prom. She suffered brain injuries, including short-term memory loss. Despite the tragedy, Pamela managed to bring joy to hundreds of daily commuters by hula-hooping, dancing, waving and smiling at motorists in the Ward's Corner section of Norfolk. Her infectious smile lifted the spirit of even those having the worst of days. Her actions did not come without controversy. Her boom box brought noise complaints from local merchants, and resulted in an unfortunate encounter with police, which eventually led to a settlement from the city in 2009. According to a 2015 article in the Virginian-Pilot, she occassionally would still hula-hoop and wave to the adoring public. However, I have not seen her in recent years.
I would like to host a hula-hoop flash mob in tribute to this woman who made so many of us happy. We will stay away from controversy, and hula-hoop in the back of the Harris-Teeter parking lot. I ask that no one hoop on Granby Street and definitely no one in the median.
We will gather at the posted coordinates, and then precisely at 1:00 PM everyone should begin hooping. You can do it on your waist, neck, or arms, or simply hold the hula-hoop over your head. At 1:15 we will have a hoop-off : whoever keeps it going the longest will win a coveted Golden Hoop. We will also have a Golden Hoop for the person who has the most flair when hooping, as decided by gallery applause.
Then we will go over to Moe's for lunch and fellowship. There is also a Starbucks and a Subway in that shopping center. For those who need a little help with the hula-hoop, there is also an ABC store to get those hips a'wiggling.
