Geocache Description:

The terrian has changed, so I added a waypoint. Its less than a 15min walk in. So its not a short hike (.75 miles round trip)but is a mostly forgotten Georgetown landmark. This area is the Wild San Gabriel River at it's best. Bus to house size boulders, 40 foot sheer cliffs, and of course the Lion's Head Spring! Best of all, you won't have to climb over any of it to enjoy this trail.

An 'oldtimer' told me --- WAIT A MINUTE, he was younger than I am! ---- Make that a long time Georgetown resident told me that this was a favorite meeting place for Saturday hunting trips when he was a kid. The 1926 Southwestern University yearbook mentions the spring as a favorite weekend gathering place for students (activity not specified). This is one of 20 odd springs mentioned in the early history of Georgetown, whose Indian name was "Land of Good Water". It only takes a little imagination to see this spring's namesake. Once you're there, the trail isn't very clear, but you're only 70 yards from your goal. Go around the boulders, you don't need to climb them unless you really feel force leading you to (it might be fun, but it won't get you to the cache!) Be prepared for poor gps coverage. The cache coordinates might lead you to try parking in private business lot off the southbound frontage road, but it's marked "private, for customers only". Also don't be tempted to park off the residential streets to the north. There's a small 40' cliff in your way! There is a parking area below the north bound frontage road bridge. The city is building it for access to the Rivery Park. The entrance to the lot is on the street behind a grocery store at 30°38.788 - 097°40.855. The road is unimproved and deeply rutted. It leads to the parking area that is marked by large stones. Park there and go under all 4 bridges and up the slope to the trailhead at 30°38.832 - 097°40.991. You'll see a BMX bike trail in the woods. It's in poor repair and the city hasn't emptied the trashcans in a while! DISCLAIMER: There's a fair amount of trash throughout the whole area. Along with the usual beer bottles and cans, we found the remains of several abandoned camps. This area might have been used by transients as a camp ground. If such makes you nervous, please just skip this cache. We have not seen people in the area the times we have been there.
