Geocache Description:

PLEASE READ THE FOLLOWING  GENERAL DESCRIPTION, RECOMMENDATIONS and COMMENTS THAT APPLY THIS SERIES AS A WHOLE BEFORE SETTING OFF.

WE CANNOT BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR ANY ISSUES THAT MAY RESULT IF YOU DO NOT!

A BRIEF NOTE ABOUT "SPOILERS": FOR THOSE WHO MAY NOT KNOW, A SPOILER IS A COMMENT OR A PHOTO IN A LOG THAT LITERALLY SPOILS THE EXPERIENCE OF OTHER CACHERS WHO MAY READ THEM BEFORE OR DURING THEIR SEARCH FOR A CACHE. ALTERNATIVELY, IT MAY SPOIL THE INTENT OF THE CACHE SETTER WITH RESPECT TO GUIDANCE GIVEN, e.g. INFORMATION CONVEYED IN TITLE, DESCRIPTION, OR HINT.

BE WARNED, IF WE SEE A SPOILER IN YOUR LOG, WE WILL NOT HESITATE TO DELETE THE LOG. WE WILL ADVISE YOU, SO YOU CAN ENTER A NEW LOG, BUT WE WILL DELETE IT

Series Description:

Newdigate is a small village and parish in the Mole Valley borough of Surrey. One of its more recent claims to fame is winning the first ever Surrey Village of the Year in 2020. For more facts of interest, see:  Newdigate on Wikipedia

Also, there are presently 4 other national series caches in the village: Church Micro 12... Newdigate, set in 2007 by sadexploration; then in June 2021: War Memorials, Village Halls and Village Signs by BaSHful.

This series consists of 31 traditional caches placed on, or very close to, public footpaths in the area to the south and west of the village of Newdigate

Series Experience

Cache sizes: The choice given in the geocache creation process is somewhat confusing so, in some cases, we provide clarification.

The route is 12+ kilometers (7.5 - 8 miles) mainly flat and criss-crosses its way through farmland, fields, and fishing lakes and one very short section twice! wink There is a short stretch of road (Misbrooks Green Rd) between #7 and #8, which is occasionally a bit busy; and there are two stretches, between #8 and  #9 and between #20 and #22, along Temple Lane, but this is a quiet lane with very little traffic, particularly in the latter section.

You will encounter gates, stiles, mud, long grass, brambles and cowpats! We definitely recommend wellies in winter and even in the height of summer if there has been a significant amount of rain. While setting these csches we were very glad of our wellies! YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!! "Waterproof " walking boots may suffice if the weather has been kind.

As you will be crossing farmland where livestock could be present in fields, please respect the countryside, stick to the footpaths as much as possible and keep dogs under control at all times, and on a lead where appropriate or requested to do so.

Note: The terrain rating for most of the caches in this series is set as 2.5 based on cachers doing the series in one outing so the rating for most is based more on distance than other aspects of terrain. The first 3 could too easily be done as standalone caches so the terain has been rated 1.5

Please replace carefully and with camo as found or, if in doubt, better than found wink

Route Alternatives

As you will see, the complete route (which the numbered sequence provides) lends itself to creating two or more shorter routes, or varying the route depending on when, during your visit, you might like to encounter a refreshment stop!

A couple of suggestions for shorter routes: Doing both will cover all 31 caches.

Starting at #16 - 15 caches (16, 17, 26, 25, 24, 23, 22, 21, 20, 9, 19, 10, 18, 27, 15)

Starting at #1 - 19 caches (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 19, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 28, 29, 30, 31)

There are other shorter routes you could devise, but you will, inevitably, end up missing out some of the caches in the series.

Refreshments

Depending on the timing of your visit, refreshments can be found in several spots: Newdigate village itself; between #8 and #9 (but not too far should you wish to return to it after doing #19; and just before #16 (if approaching it from #15.

Parking

None of these caches are suitable for cache and dash finds. There is no suitable parking along Misbrooks Green Road or Temple Lane. So please don't try it. If residents find people trying it, they will want to know why and may spoil the fun for everyone.

Parking close to the start of the circuit is limited. The village hall, nearby, has a car park but this is best avoided - it has lots of discouraging notices. You may find a space to park in the side road opposite the hall. There are other caches in and around the village, and you may well be starting or ending your caching visit from the village centre, so we would recommend looking for a parking space along Church Lane, outside St Peter's Church, or along Rusper Road within the village itself.

This Cache is the 1st in the series.

The container is a double-boxed 60ml pot - please replace carefully - you will see why..
