I have spoke with the Raccoon Creek State Park office and was asked if I could organize an event to help clean up the park speciffically around the lake. If you have a boat (not gas powered) you can clean up from the water and if not you can pick up trash on land the old fashoned way. Alternatively you can choose to rent a kayak, canoe, fishing boat, or hydro bike from Raccoon Creek Boat Rental for a fee. Do a web search of their name for the prices. If you plan to rent please let me know in your will attend log so I can give the rental company an estimate. Also let them know you are part of the "Geocaching Clean Up Crew" and they will give you a 20% discount.Â
I plan to meet up at 11am at the posted coordinates near the boat rental and we can all spit up from there. There may be several caches that pop up at the end of the event. All of them will need to be accessed from a boatÂ
Raccoon Creek State Park is located in Beaver County just a few minutes west of the Pittsburgh Airport, Raccoon Creek State Park is a beautiful 7300 acre park that features Raccoon Lake, miles of hiking trails, camping, fishing, horseback riding and a nature center/wildflower preserve. The park can be reached from U.S. Route 30 or PA Route 18.Â
If you arrive late, bring your own bag, head down to one of the following areas, and pitch in by grabbing whatever litter you see. TAKE PICTURES of the trash you clean up!
What needs cleaned up:
- You can utilize any of the dumpsters around the park to dispose of the litter. If so, there is a dumpster at the boat trailer parking lot that isn’t too far. Also, the ones at the swim beach aren’t that far either. If there is a lot more stuff than can fit in them, we have some dumpsters just beyond the park office that could be utilized as well.
- When I was out on the water the other day, I noticed quite a bit of trash along the water from the boat rental area going down all the way towards the swim beach. Most of the trash would be a lot easier to grab by boat. So, cleanup of that area would be greatly appreciated! Now, if you still had time, there was also more than I expected in the cove-like area beyond the swim beach as well, which would depend on the water level how far back you could get into places. Plus, anywhere else along the water in general would be good.
- The boat rental area could definitely use a bit of a spruce up. There is constantly stuff discarded around there. Then, I guess, they could walk along the water and grab what they can on foot. Besides that, maybe the boat rental parking area and beach parking area. It just depends on how far away people want to go. (I would just suggest people wear bright colors and wear any safety vests for visibility, if they have them.)
