Dziesmu svētku estrāde uzcelta 1955. gadā. 1954. gadā Republikāniskajā projektu institūtā tika izstrādāts estrādes projekts, kura nosaukums bija „Tribīne ar estrādi masu sarīkojumiem kultūras un atpūtas parkā „Mežaparks”, projekta autors bija arhitekta Vladimirs Šņitņikovs. Estrādē bija paredzēta vieta 7 000 dziedātājiem, 100 dejotāju pāriem, 35 000 skatītājiem. Estrāde saglabāja savam laikam tipisko parādes arhitektūras seju, kuru vainagoja tēlnieka Ļeva Bukovska skulptūras, kas tur atradās līdz pat 1990. gadam.
Pirmos lielāko remontdarbus estrāde piedzīvoja 20.gs. 70. gados, 1972. gadā „Latkomunālprojektā” pēc arhitektes Ināras Caunītes projekta. 1990. gadā notika estrādes rekonstrukcija. Projektu sagatavoja 1989.gadā „Pilsētprojektā”, autori – arhitekti Andrejs Ģelzis un Juris Paegle, akustiķis – Andris Zabrauskis. Rekonstrukcija ietvēra sānu arku un deju grīdas – skatuves – nojaukšanu, koru tribīnēs nodrošinot vietu 15 000 dziedātāju.
2005. gadā Rīgas pašvaldība noorganizēja starptautisku arhitektūras plenēru, kura mērķis bija iegūt Mežaparka teritorijas attīstības vīziju un arī noteikt Mežaparka Lielās estrādes izdevīgāko atrašanās vietu. Par piemērotāko risinājumu tika noteikta pašreizējā atrašanās vieta.
2006. gadā tika izsludināts konkurss, kas paredzēja nojaukt 1990. gadā uzceltās sānu tribīnes, bet konkursā tika iesniegts tikai viens darbs un tika izsludināts jauns konkurss, kur tika iesniegti divi darbi, bet žūrija nevienu no priekšlikumiem neuzskatīja par iespējamu attīstīt. 2007. gadā tika izsludināts jauns starptautisks konkurss, kur no 17 iesniegtajiem darbiem uzvarēja arhitekta Jura Pogas projekts.
Plānots, ka estrādes rekonstrukcija notiks divās kārtās. 2018. gadā tika īstenota projekta pirmā kārta, kas sevī ietvēra skatītāju zonas pārbūvi, paplašinot to līdz vismaz 30000 sēdvietām, ko iespējams transformēt par aptuveni 60000 stāvvietām, kā arī tiks izbūvēts apakšzemes apjoms ar labierīcībām, ēdināšanas un tirdzniecības vietām.
Rekonstrukcijas otro kārtu plānots realizēt līdz 2023. gadam un arī to sadalīs divos posmos — pirmo posmu plānots pabeigt līdz XII Latvijas skolu jaunatnes dziesmu un deju svētkiem, kas norisināsies 2020. gada 18. jūnijā, bet otro līdz 2023. gadam, kad Dziesmu un deju svētki atzīmēs 150. gadadienu. Otrā kārtā tiks rekonstruēta estrāde ar pārsegumu kupola formā, kas ļaus tribīnēs atrasties 11000 pasākumu dalībniekiem un vēl apmēram 3000 izvietoties uz skatuves. Estrādē būšot pasaulē lielākā kora tribīne, kurā vienlaikus varēs atrasties 13 000 koristi. 2019. gada 16. janvārī Lielās estrādes pamatos svinīgi tika iemūrēta kapsula ar vēstījumu nākamajām paaudzēm.

The Song Festival Stage was built in 1955. In 1954, the Republican Design Institute developed a project for the stage, titled "Tribune with a Stage for Mass Events in the Mežaparks Cultural and Recreation Park," designed by architect Vladimirs Šņitņikovs. The stage was intended to accommodate 7,000 singers, 100 pairs of dancers, and 35,000 spectators. The stage retained the typical architectural style of that time, complemented by sculptures by artist Ļevs Bukovskis, which remained there until 1990.
The stage underwent major renovations in the 1970s, in 1972, according to architect Ināra Caunīte's project. In 1990, the stage was reconstructed. The project was prepared in 1989 by "Pilsētprojekts," with architects Andrejs Ģelzis and Juris Paegle, and acoustician Andris Zabrauskis. The reconstruction included the demolition of side arches and the dance floor, or stage, while providing seating for 15,000 singers in the choir stands.
In 2005, the Riga City Council organized an international architecture workshop with the aim of obtaining a vision for the development of the Mežaparks area and determining the most advantageous location for the Great Song Festival Stage. The current location was determined to be the most suitable solution.
In 2006, a competition was announced, which involved the demolition of the side stands built in 1990. However, only one entry was submitted, leading to a new competition where two entries were received, but the jury did not consider either proposal feasible for development. In 2007, a new international competition was announced, and architect Jurs Poga's project was chosen as the winner among 17 submitted works.
The reconstruction of the stage is planned to be carried out in two stages. In 2018, the first stage of the project was implemented, involving the reconstruction of the audience area, expanding it to at least 30,000 seating places that can be transformed into approximately 60,000 standing places. An underground structure with facilities, catering, and commercial areas will also be built.
The second stage of the reconstruction is planned to be completed by 2023, and it will also be divided into two phases. The first phase is scheduled to be completed by the 12th Latvian School Youth Song and Dance Festival, which will take place on June 18, 2020. The second phase is planned to be completed by 2023 when the Song and Dance Festival celebrates its 150th anniversary. In the second phase, the stage will be reconstructed with a dome-shaped roof, allowing 11,000 participants to be seated in the stands and approximately 3,000 to be accommodated on the stage. The stage will have the world's largest choir stand, capable of accommodating 13,000 choir singers simultaneously. On January 16, 2019, a capsule with a message for future generations was ceremoniously placed in the foundations of the Great Song Festival Stage.
