The railway reached shoeburyness in 1884 when the London Tilbury and Southend railway reached the town and a connection was built into the firing ranges which still exists today.
The internal railway is about 8 miles in length with two lines stretching to Haven Point. There used to be a branch onto Havengore Island but the track had to be put onto Havengore Bridge and then taken off again and hasn't been used since the 1960's. The railway was used up until 2005 to store railway carriages and until 2010 to carry ammunition into the ranges. Since then the railway has seen no use but the mainline connection still exists. A former locomotive used on the railway was 0-8-0 Sentinel "General Lord Robertson" which was oriignally built for the Longmoor Military Railway but moved to Shoeburyness when it closed in 1970. The locomotive could reach 60mph but when it did so it rocked backward and forwards and damaged the track.
