Do you like kayaking?
Do you like watching things blow up?
This is a perfect opportunity to combine those two loves!
We will gather at the Lake Jesup Boat Ramp, at the end of S Sanford Ave, at 7:pm, and drop our boats in the water. Then, we will paddle out to the posted coordinates, hopefully dodging all the giant alligators and drunks on airboats. The city of Winter Springs is hosting a fireworks show at Central Winds Park, and they generally launch their fireworks over the lake, making this spot perfect for watching.
You will most definitely want bug spray. The launch can get pretty buggy, but there is usually enough breeze on the lake to keep them away. You'll also want some lights on your boat. USCG says you need a minimum of one white light, capable of illuminating in 360 degrees. Yes, a flashlight meets these requirements. Yes, you'll want more. I would suggest glow sticks, fore and aft, as well as a good headlamp. You'll also need a PFD and a whistle. FWC will likely be in the area, and getting a ticket is a great way to ruin a celebration of independence.
When paddling Jesup, at night, I advocate going around the alligators, rather than thinking they will submerge, to avoid you. Hitting one that got blinded by your headlamp, can make for a very exciting evening. Trust me on this. Once the show ends, (usually around 9:30pm), we'll head back to the ramp and load boats.
Hope to see you there!
