Little Bridges ~ Swing Bridge
The 'swing bridge'
The C19 suspension bridge spanning the River Derwent is affectionately known to the locals as ‘swing bridge’. This is on account of it being a bit lively! Just walking over it at a brisk pace will cause it to bounce and sway.
With a span of 95 feet, the bridge itself is a beautiful and eye-catching piece of Victorian ironwork. I am reliably informed that the piers are actually railway track!
It was constructed in 1885 by the London and North Eastern Railway Company and links the North Riding of Yorkshire villages of Low and High Hutton (collectively named Huttons Ambo) to the East Riding hamlet of Menethorpe. It also takes you onto the Centenary Way which runs across the Howardian Hills and Yorkshire Wolds via Castle Howard and Wharram Percy.
On 11 February 1987, the bridge was awarded Grade II listed status and is described as:

The Little Bridges series was started by Stanthews in 2009 to highlight small footbridges in remote parts of Wiltshire. Since then the series has been expanded by others all over the country and starting to spread fast. There is a stats listing, so you can see how many Little Bridges you have found, you can find it here: - https://www.littlebridgesseries.co.uk.
If you would like to add to the series, please go to this site, on the tab 'Get Involved' click number request and fill in the form. To qualify, the bridge must be a foot bridge too small for vehicles.
