Please note Use of geocaching.com services is subject to the terms and conditions
in our disclaimer.
You can drive within 1/4 mile of this cache on fairly good roads
(no 4WD necessary). The road forms the southern boundary of the Big
Jacks Creek Wilderness area. The cache itself is located within the
wilderness area and you will need to hike the short distance from
the road.
Early in the 20th Century, many "survival monuments" were erected
in this area, and stocked with food. The monuments were visible
from miles away, so that a traveller in this desolate region would
know the location of these caches of food if he needed them. Many
of these monuments are still visible along this stretch of road.
Thank you, kb7syc, for helping us out on the history of this area
and the survival caches, and for steering us to Mildretta Adams'
book "Sagebrush Post Offices, A History of Owyhee County". This
cache is not a "survival" cache, but is placed near an original
monument. The cache container is an ammo can, and is located a
short distance away so that the original monument need not be
disturbed. Have fun and enjoy a little Idaho history!
