Geocache Description:

29 May 2021, 09:00 - 10:45

In 1884 Gilbert Burnett constructed a tramway on a causeway through these salt pans. Designed to carry sugar and timber, it was never used for this purpose. In 1888, the area was declared a reserve. Today it is the Geoff Skinner Wetlands, internationally recognized as part of the Moreton Bay Ramsar site. Unfortunately, the entire area is littered with washed-up marine plastics.

8 million tonnes of plastic enters our oceans every year, 80% of this originates from rivers. Here's a chance to remove the rubbish that has been fortunate to wash back up within our reach, and prevent it becoming an ongoing problem by re-entering the ocean, or deteriorating into microplastics in place.

You'll be having a direct and positive impact on the local, regional and global environment at this event. Plus, the opportunity to hang out with other cool geocachers, and find the local geocaches.

What's the Plan?
This is a CITO Event, and will center around collecting rubbish from along the path, causeway and accessible parts of the Geoff Skinner Wetlands. We'll have a staging area set up at GZ with the equipment you'll need and where you'll return rubbish to. Expect short sections of the path to be flooded up to ankle depth.

There is a lot of area to cover, and all sorts of sizes of junk to collect. Check out the map for the approximate location of the track, beside which we'll be able to access and entirely clean. The option is up to you how far out into the wetlands you walk - it is almost a kilometre to the far end of the causeway. Straying too far from the track might have you in a sticky situation though!

Meet at GZ at 09:00 where you'll be briefed, can be assigned a section to clean and either when you've filled your bags, or 10:30 arrives, we'll reconvene at GZ for the group photo and to hand out prizes and giveaways.

There will be a scavenger hunt aspect to the rubbish collection to share the gift-love around! I have over $100 worth of goodies to give out (geocaches, trackables and such). But, the deal is, we're going to try to fill the 2m3 bulk bag at GZ!

What to Bring?
Please wear appropriate clothing (I would recommend long pants) and shoes that can get wet. BYO sunscreen, bug spray, gloves and water. Bags will be provided.

We want this to be a fun, social and engaging event while still being COVID-Safe.
I kindly ask that you agree to the following expectations:
• Stay at home if you are at all unwell,
• Keep a social distance from those not from your household, and
• Maintain good hand hygiene.

To make this event both possible and as brilliant as it will be, let's thank the sponsors:
Redland City Council who provided permission and rubbish pick-up,
Ocean Crusaders Waterway Cleaning who provided all equipment,
All Things Geo who donated a bunch of prizes and giveaways.
