Geocache Description:

War Memorial, Elston

Elston War Memorial is Grade II* listed, achieving the status on 16 January 1967 and is listed as it is part of All Saints but is accessible at any point due to it being located in the porch.

When reading the names, you will notice two males lost whose surnames are Darwin. They are direct descendants of Charles as his family home was at Elston Hall and he spent a good deal of time, which is well dicumented, in the village.

The memorial also unusually includes a female civilian, Vivian Castle. Vivien (for her name on the memorial has been spelt incorrectly) was just 18 years old when she was one of 41 people killed on 7 March 1941 by bombs dropped on the Ransome & Marles bearings factory in Newark where she worked.

A full list of each person listed on the memorial can be found on the Elston Heritage Society website.
