Kārtenes pilskalns paceļas 178 m virs jūras līmeņa un ir augstākais punkts Gulbenes vaļņa ziemeļu galā. Kārtenes pilskalns ierīkots savrupā, 25 m augstā kalnā, vairāk kā 4 ha plašumā un 35 m augsta kalna virsotnē un ir labi saredzams no tālienes. 2020. gadā tika izbūvētas koka trepes ar margu, lai būtu ērtāka nokļūšana kalna virsotnē. Pilskalna plakums ir klajš, tā izmēri ir 100x50 m. Savulaik tas izmantots kā sarīkojumu un izklaides vieta. Kārtenes pilskalna ziemeļu pakājē atrodas “acs” - jādomā, ka tur ir atradusies seno pils iemītnieku ūdens krātuve. Melnā un dziļā mītņu kārta norāda, ka pilskalns ir bijis ilgi apdzīvots. Pilskalna lielums un veidojums liek domāt, ka šeit atradusies kāda no ievērojamākajām Tālavas pilīm.

Kārtene castle mound is located on a separate, 25 m high hill, more than 4 ha wide and at the top of a 35 m high hill and is well visible from afar. In 2020, a wooden staircase with a railing was built to make it easier to get to the top of the mountain. The plateau of the castle mound is open, its dimensions are 100x50 m. It was once used as a place for parties and entertainment. There is an "eye" at the northern foot of the Kārtene castle mound - it must be thought that there was a reservoir of water for the ancient inhabitants of the castle. The black and deep layer of dwellings indicates that the castle mound has been inhabited for a long time. The size and formation of the castle mound makes us think that one of the most significant castles in Tālava was located here.
