Het sluizencomplex van Nieuwpoort is beter gekend als ‘De Ganzenpoot’. De naam verwijst naar de vorm van het gehele complex. Deze plek speelde een cruciale rol tijdens de Eerste Wereldoorlog. In oktober 1914 zorgde het openen van de sluizen voor de onderwaterzetting van de IJzervlakte. Daarmee kwam een einde aan de oprukking van de Duitse troepen. Met behulp van de sluizen bleef de IJzervlakte de hele oorlog onder water staan.
Op deze plaats komen 6 waterlopen tesamen en stromen zo in de Noordzee.

The lock complex of Nieuwpoort is better known as 'De Ganzenpoot'. The name refers to the shape of the entire complex. This place played a crucial role during the First World War. In October 1914, the opening of the locks resulted in the flooding of the Yser Plain. This put an end to the advance of the German troops. With the help of the locks, the Yser Plain remained under water throughout the war.
