St Giles, Darlton

ST GILES, DARLTON

St Giles, Darlton is a Grade II* listed building, achieving the status on 1 February 1967. The lychgate and church walls are also Grade II listed, achieving the status on 12 July 1985. 3 chest tombs with iron railings are listed in the churchyard, also on 12 July 1985.

The church was built in two main stages several centuries apart in C12th and C19th. The church was completely rebuilt in 1863 save for the tower by Thomas Chambers Hine.

The building is layed out with a tower, nave, north aisle, north vestry.

The 3 stage tower is C12th with a C19th pyramidal, tiled roof.

Inside, the furniture is all C19th, dating from the rebuild. Two C15th wall brasses hang of a knight and a lady.

The building is not in a good condition with a large gap between the nave and chancel allowing rainwater to get in the building. Several windows are also smashed.

The church closed in 2006.
