Geocache Description:

[LV]  2019. gada 8. decembrī Latvijā pasažieru satiksmei tika slēgtas vairākas mazās
stacijas. Lielākā daļa no tām bija uz 1889. gadā atvērtās Rīgas- Valkas līnijas-
Baltezers, Silciems, Bāle, Brenguļi, Seda, Saule. Slēpnis veltīts vienai no tām-

[EN]  On December 8, 2019, a number of small railway stations were closed in Latvia. Most
of them were located on the Riga–Valka railway line (opened in 1889): Baltezers,
Silciems, Bale, Brenguli, Seda, Saule. The geocache is dedicated to one of them —
Silciems, which operated since 1926. Before the closure, about five trains to each side
made a stop there. Although it is clear that it was not from all trains that passengers
got off, still the station was used by some locals, including a well-known playwright.
In summer and in autumn, the station was used by mushroom-pickers and tourists,
from time to time – also by some workers from the nearby concrete factory, Siguldas
Bloks. From here, it is a couple of kilometres walk by picturesque forest roads to such
touring objects as Ziedlejas Cliffs, Lorupe Ravine, Kalki Ravine Springs and Allazi
Church. To get to the first two, one has to cross Vidzeme Highway at the Aerodium (1
km). In the Soviet epoch, there was still a station building with a booking office (what
a quiet life for the cashier!), which, after the arsons at stations that were frequent in
the 1990s, was replaced with a shed. At present, it is still there, and some time ago the
platform lighting was also in place. It is heard that in other sparsely populated
countries it is possible to order the train to stop at a certain station, buying a ticket in
advance.
The cache only contains the logbook. You have to take a pen with you.
