Geocache Description:

20 December 2020, 12:00 - 13:00

With this years Geocaching Wonder of the Worlds series coming to an end on 31 December 2020, I thought now was the time to enact my plan to have a picnic event out here.

I love coming to the Okia Reserve and wondering down to the pryramids after discovering them 7 years ago (almost to the day).

It turns out this will also be Event #100 I will be hosting and possibly could be Hide#500.

Event: Picnic near the pryamid (due to the limited space on top and popularity of area not on top). Bring enough food and drink for yourselves.

Date: Sunday 20th December (weekend day closet to the Summer Solstice)

Weather: 48hrs out Cloudy. A shower or two possible in the morning. Southerlies dying out by evening. Even a cloudy day can result in burns so remember to use Sunscreen and bring water.

Please note as this is a sancutry area for wildlife, so afraid no dogs allowed.

Also there are bait/posion stations about, please do not touch these.

Nearest public toilets, food and water is in Portobello.

At 16:02 there is predicted to be a low tide of 0.3m which should be low enough to see the fly wheel on Victory Beach for those planning on walking the loop after the event. If the weather is not particularly good you can come back for the shorter walk to the fly wheel.

Why the pryamids? Ever since the Wonder of the Worlds was annouced I thought it would be the perfect place for an event, 10 days before this challenge closes.

Why a date close to the Summer Solstice? The summer solstice was especially important in Ancient Egypt because it heralded the coming of Sirius, the brightest star in the night sky. Shortly after Sirius arrived each year, the Nile would overflow its banks and the flood season would begin, which the Egyptians relied on to nourish the land. They believed that Sirius was responsible for the flooding and set their calendar based on the star’s arrival in the night sky. As soon as the priests saw Sirius they declared that the New Year had begun.
