Geocache Description:

19 December 2020, 12:00 - 16:00

You are all invited to a community Christmas Camping event at Somewhere Else, our private campground in the Mathinna/Evercreech area.

Although the event is for Saturday, we will be there from early Friday, and likely not go home again, so it's fine to stay a few days, just Saturday night, or even just come for a day visit on Saturday (or Sunday).

The event will include a simple activity around the block (60 acres), and there will be BBQ facilities available for lunch. Mostly it will be a chance to relax and catch up with others. There is a 6x6m outdoor area if the weather is iffy.

Bring whatever chairs you need.

There is no "natural" mobile reception at the block, however there is access to satellite NBN.

Unless there is a TOTAL fire ban, there will be a campfire - we have no wood shortage! The river is absolutely suitable for kayaking, and you can head upstream for about 600m without needing to go past any rapids. We have two plastics that people are welcome to use. If you want to go for a wander, the fishing can be quite good. The river is about 80m from the main camping area.

If you're going to camp, there is plenty of room, and the area is grassy. The track in is in good enough condition for caravans. If you have your own toilet, we would ask that you bring it for "solids" as our composting toilet can't handle large groups. If you don't that's fine too. There's also room to spread out, so if you want to get away from the main group, there's plenty of room. Seriously.

Dogs are welcome, as long as they're friendly. Ours are off-lead at all times (three schnauzers), and yours are welcome to be as well.

Post any questions you have and I will update the description as we go.

Mathinna has NO general store. There is (usually) fuel available at the "Country Club". Fingal has a store, but the hours of opening are limited. Basically, bring anything you need.

Directions

  • Via Highway (From Launceston) its about 95 min and 134km but bitumen all the way. Head to Fingal and follow signs to Mathinna. If you're coming from Hobart do the same - Fingal then head to Mathinna.

OR

  • Via C401 past Ben Lomond its about 75 min and 80km. Has about 20Km of dirt road and some of it steep, but we go this way as its shorter. Road is reasonably good at the moment. If you use Google maps, load it up early as you lose phone reception not far out of Launceston. Not the best with a caravan.

Once at the Intersection for Mathinna township.

  • Turn down C423 towards Ringarooma and cross South Esk river. Cross one more bridge and soon on right turn down Claytons Rd.
  • Head down this road past 2 other reasonably large intersections on the left for 3 Km (Pretty well exactly 3km from the corner).

On the right at the 3Km mark are 2 white posts with orange markers. Turn in here. Will have keep out signs. We will put out a witches hat as well.

Follow track past some metal saw tables and should become obvious of a track to follow. Follow it approx. 800m to a T intersection and turn right into camp.
