Cache In Trash Out

Event Details

Date: Sunday September 20th,  2020

Time: 9:00 am - 10:30 am

Location:  Chief Peguis Trail (between Henderson Highway & the Red River)

The last CITO at this location worked really well, so why change a good thing? Again we will join forces with both Take Pride Winnipeg and the City of Winnipeg.  Despite our great efforts during the Summer CITO event, there continues to be a lot of trash at this location!  Take Pride will again provide the gloves and the bags, and The City of Winnipeg will be picking up what we collect.

We will be picking up trash along the North and South sides of Chief Peguis Trail, from Henderson Highway to the Red River. Come prepared to walk and cover some ground!  (One way from Henderson to the river is approximately 850 meters.)  The North side and South side do connect under the bridge forming a loop.

North side info: There is a trail along the North side, known as the Chief Peguis Greenway.  The portion of the trail that we will be covering starts at the North corner of Henderson and Chief Peguis and goes West to the Red River.  (The construction under the bridge has been completed.)  You can either go onto the bridge from there, continue along the path to the South side, or circle back the way you came.

South side info:  There is a paved sidewalk that starts at the South corner of Henderson and Chief Peguis Trail, and runs right along the side of Chief Peguis Trail.  Due to being close to the road, wearing bright colours/safety vest is recommended.  The most garbage is along this portion of Chief Peguis Trail (view gallery). The sidewalk goes until the bus stop on the bridge, then you can access the trail to Whellams Avenue.  From there you can access the trail and go under the bridge to go to the North side, take the stairs up to the bridge, or return the way you came.  There is quite a bit of garbage on the sidewalk on the bridge as well.

DUE TO COVERING SO MUCH GROUND AND NOT WANTING PEOPLE TO CARRY HEAVY GARBAGE BAGS, A FEW LOCATIONS HAVE BEEN ARRANGED FOR YOU TO LEAVE THE GARBAGE YOU COLLECT.  THEY ARE:

1. N 49 56.932 W 097 05.362   The first spot is on the North side of Chief Peguis, between Henderson and the river.  There is a bench, signage and a garbage can.  You can drop off the collected garbage here.

2. N 49 56.922 W 097 05.564   The second spot is on Whellams Avenue.  You can access this spot while on the South side of Chief Peguis. There is a bench off to the side of a bus loop.  You can drop off the collected garbage here.

3. You can also leave the garbage collected at the posted coords.

We will meet at the posted coords and you can determine which route and area works the best for you.  I will  have bags and gloves supplied by Take Pride, please bring your own reachy stick.

CITOCache In Trash Out® (CITO) is an environmental initiative supported by the geocaching community. Since 2002, CITO has helped preserve the natural beauty of cache-friendly spaces. In that time, more than 363,000 people have volunteered at 18,000 CITO events.

Twice per year, geocachers can earn virtual souvenirs by hosting and attending events during CITO seasons.  In 2020, geocachers around the globe will gather together between March 01st through August 31st (CITO Season 1) and September 01– November 30 (CITO Season 2) to pick up trash, remove invasive species, repair trails and more.
