Għajnsielem became autonomous parish by papal decree in 1855. The old parish church is still standing but, with the increase of the population of the village, a larger building became necessary and the construction of a new church, in Lombard Gothic style and in the shape of a Latin cross, started in 1924.
The work was intermittent, interrupted by the First World War, as well as by two accidents in which the master mason Toni Vella broke his legs while falling from the building. The first architect resigned, the second died, and the church had a total of four architects to supervise the work.
The church we see today was finally completed with the blessing of the steeple in June 1979.
It is dedicated to Notre-Dame-de-Lorette and, when the new church was completed, the titular statue was transferred from the old place of worship to the new one. This superb work produced by Galard et Fils de Marseille arrived in Gozo on October 14, 1866 to be carried in procession from the port of Mġarr to Għajnsielem.

Għajnsielem devint paroisse autonome par décret papal en 1855. L’ancienne église paroissiale est encore debout mais, avec l’augmentation de la population du village, un édifice plus grand devint nécessaire et la construction d’une nouvelle église, de style gothique lombard et en forme de croix latine, débuta en 1924.
Les travaux furent intermittents, interrompus par la Première guerre mondiale, ainsi que par deux accidents lors desquels le maître maçon Toni Vella se brisa les jambes en tombant du bâtiment. Le premier architecte démissionna, le second mourut et l’église eut en tout quatre architectes pour superviser les travaux.
L’église que nous voyons aujourd’hui fut finalement achevée avec la bénédiction du clocher en juin 1979.
Elle est dédiée à Notre-Dame-de-Lorette et, quand la nouvelle église fut terminée, la statue titulaire fut transférée de l’ancien lieu de culte au nouveau. Cette œuvre superbe réalisée par Galard et Fils de Marseille arriva à Gozo le 14 octobre 1866 pour être portée processionnellement du port de Mġarr à Għajnsielem.
