Opened in 1857, Westerfield Station is a tiny, little-used station on the East Suffolk line from Ipswich to Lowestoft. In 1877, the Felixstowe branch line was opened with the junction lying a short distance east of Westerfield Station. Originally a tramway was planned from Ipswich to Felixstowe but George Tomline proposed, instead, a proper railway line running from Westerfield to Felixstowe. This means that to travel due East from Ipswich to Felixstowe, trains actually leave Ipwich in a westerly direction, looping around the north of the town before turning east again.
Despite regular services stopping at the station, located in a small village and with no parking, the station does not have a high number of passenger numbers.
