What better way to celebrate geocaching than to gather near the #1 Found Geocache in Nassau County GC3MZ4J "Field Five" and celebrate its hider "Carteron." The cache is now Archived but it still holds the title in Nassau County by being found 662 times.
He is the 13th Highest Hider in New York State and the 2nd Highest Hider in Suffolk County. He had held the #1 spot for a long time and has hidden 350 Geocaches on Long Island. He is Finder #14 in Suffolk County and has 3,330 Finds as of today.
I learned a lot of things geocaching with Carteron:
- Always bring lots of geocaching supplies.
Carteron hid XL in his "Get Your Cache" series.
Note: Carteron always corrected my calculation of Roman Numerals.
I had XXXX but the correct usage is XL. (Look it Up)
- Always bring an extra set of clothing and shoes. You will be dirty, wet and likely both.
If you walk through a Tick Nest-You will not be allowed in the car!
- If you are doing a power run and drop one car off at the end.
Don't leave your keys in the car at the beginning!
4. There are no rattler or poisonous snakes on Long Island. We did find a huge black snake in Heckscher State Park that has a rattler in its tail for defense. If you keep your distance, a snake will nearly always refrain from striking.
It is also good to have Siri on call to check out snakes because someone will just want to take photos.
5. Don't ask someone who is immune to Poison Ivy to check for poisonous leaves.
Poison Ivy oils can last on surfaces for 10 years.
Hand sanitizer works if you use it right away after touching a surface.
6. Bring lots of pens, markers and pencils. If you bring one, it will run out of ink the first time you use it. Ron will borrow and lose at least 5 while geocaching.
He will probably find a huge stash of pens & pencils as he packs up his things.
7. Bring lots of batteries, you will be probably be gone from sunrise to sunset.
There were no smart phones when we started geocaching.
8. Carteron is great to have along for solving Puzzle Caches. We couldn’t have solved “GCHTK1 Five Star New York” or “GC14223 GAMER'S QUEST 8 - AcRoBaTs & WaYpOiNtS, Oh My!” Without him.
He hid 27 Puzzles caches and found 237 Unknowns!
9. Bring lots of duct tape-you can fix geocaches, your pants and is good for pulling off ticks.
We decided that electrical tape works a lot better on attaching magnets and lasts longer.
10. Earth magnets are the best and you cannot use magnets near the beach.

11. I will finally be able to hide a geocache in Ronkonkoma. The only cache he would allow me to hide in his town was

12. Geocaching is more fun with a friend. We wish we had taken more photos!

It's hard for me to pick my favorite Geocaching adventure with Ron, we've had so much fun: Falling into the swamp, sliding down a hill, beautiful gardens, sunsets...If I had to pick one-it would be the Bird Sanctuary in Sag Harbor. The photo says it all. Thanks Ron!
