Geocache Description:

Sydenham Hill Station.

Sydenham Hill station opened on 1st July 1863.It was known as Sydenham Hill (for Crystal Palace) until 1936 when the palace burned down. It was a simple station built by the London, Chatham and Dover Railwa; Penge Station was far grander. This station sits in a deep cutting and is accessed by steps.

Around 1890 LC&DR began to improve the station and after the formation of the South Eastern and Chatham Railway in 1899 there was a complete rebuild which included single-storey waiting rooms, extended platforms and buildings up above the cutting which were linked to the platforms by a lattice footbridge. Sadly, most of the SE&CR improvements have long gone.
