I have taken over and replaced BaSHful's cache I will leave his discription at the end.

The building before you is a guard house from the Napoleonic Wars, erected in Horsham in 1797.It was dismantled and erected here on 15th November 1816 and opened as an Independent calvinistic Chapel for Joseph Flint ( an early 19th century farme and shopkeeper in the village.

The opening sermons  at Charlwood Union Chapel  were preached by ministers from Epsom and Dorking. The Chapel only had one permanent pastor, CT Smith 1816-1834. From then it was served mostly by strict baptist ministers. Smith regulary preached in Horley wher is 1846 andother chapel was built with help from Charlwood. From December 1844 the chaple was registered to perfom marriages and around this time had a conregation of around 150, rivalling the parish church.

The congregation deminished and the last member,Jane Eade, became disabled in 2011. The chaple trustees put the chapel up for sale and it was purchesed for £1 by The Providence Chapel Charlwood Trust in March 2013. With help of a lottery grant the Chapel has just been refurbished as a learning center/extra classroom for tha adjecent school and general hire use.

Below is Bernard origional post.

Erected in 1816 as "Charlwood Union Chapel" but was brought from Horsham and appears to date from circa 1800. One storey weatherboarded on brick base. Hipped slate roof with brick chimney, the roof forming a veranda to the south-east elevation supported on 8 wooden columns. Three shuttered windows. Left side 4 panelled door and central 6 panelled door. Central path of Charlwood stone. The interior contains 2 vestries. The minister's vestry has an early 19th century fireplace with reeded shelf. The octagonal pulpit at the north-east with pointed arched backboard and the table pew with square splay-sided table and flanking box pews date from the early 19th century. A most unusual building, more typical of New England than Surrey.
