Community Celebration Event

Sunday, 01 Nov, 12pm - 2pm

@ Newk's

3883 Promenade Pkwy,

D'Iberville, MS 39540

This official event was originally scheduled in early 2020, but has now been rescheduled for 01 Nov 2020!

Let's celebrate 20 years of Geocaching with good food, good friends, and good stories!

Newk's and I request that we celebrate responsibly by wearing masks when we're not eating, and sitting at least 6 feet away from other attendees from a different household.  Seating will be outdoors if the weather permits!

A group photo will be taken at 12:30pm, but this is a drop-in/drop-out event, so feel free to stay or go whenever you like!

Prizes are available via ice breaker, crossword, trivia, and raffle!

The ice breaker winner will be announced at 1:30pm.  The raffle will be held at 1:45pm.  The first cachers to complete the crossword and trivia will receive a prize.  Only one prize per person to spread the love!

What is “Big Blue Switch” day?

On May 2, 2000, just past midnight, the U.S government discontinued its use of Selective Availability in order to make GPS more responsive to civil and commercial users worldwide. Twenty-four satellites around the globe processed their new orders, and instantly the accuracy of GPS technology improved tenfold. Tens of thousands of GPS receivers around the world had an instant upgrade. Prior to this date, only the military had the ability to receive accurate GPS readings. Now, the world and all its wonderful people could pinpoint their precise location. For reasons unknown, this is often referred to as the flipping of the “Big Blue Switch”.

The very next day, a computer consultant named Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket in the woods near Portland, Oregon. Along with a logbook and pencil, he left various prize items including videos, books, software, and a slingshot, then posted the coordinates online.

Three days later, the container was located by Mike Teague. Now, twenty years later, geocaching has become a global phenomenon to get off the couch and get outside.
