War Memorial #1065 ~ 91st USAF BG - Royston

The memorial is to the airmen of the 91st Bomb Group in Priory Gardens, Royston. The memorial stands in the centre of the plot with bedding plants surrounding the memorial. The memorial is slightly raised above the plot with three steps and a path linking the memorial to the edge of the plot. The memorial is of pink granite with a bronze plaque on the front face. The 91st Bomb Group (Heavy) was an air combat unit of the USAAF during World War 2. The 91st operated B-17 Flying Fortresses were known unofficially as "The Ragged Irregulars" or as "Wray's Ragged Irregulars" after the commander who took the group to England. During World War II the unit consisted of the 322nd, 323rd, 324th and 401st Bomb Squadrons. The 91st Bomb Group is most noted as the unit in which the bomber Memphis Belle flew and for having suffered the greatest number of losses of any heavy bomb group during the war. The 91st Bomb Group conducted 340 bombing missions over Europe operating out of RAF Bassingbourn.
