About SideTracked Caches

This cache belongs to the SideTracked series. It is not designed to take you to a magical place with a breath taking view. It's a distraction for the weary traveller, but anyone else can go and find it too. More Information can be found at the SideTracked Website

This is a Really SideTracked Cache, a category for stations that once were. In this particular case, a brief existence during the rapid expansion of the rail system in Queen Victoria's time .

About Really SideTracked - Bottesford South Station

The Great Northern & London North Western Joint Railway.

This was the grandiose title of the North/South railway line through Bottesford which connected to Melton, Leicester, Market Harborough and Northampton. The GNR alone owned the section on to Newark, but to the south it was jointly operated.

Bottesford had north, south and west junctions connecting the joint line to the established east/west route and Bottesford South Station opened in 1879.

It closed just 3 years later in 1882 when the Northampton to Newark through service was withdrawn.

The line itself remained open for freight only use until the 1970s, eventually restricted to serving just a fuel oil storage depot a few miles down the line at Redmile; part of the governments strategic fuel reserves during WWII and the Cold War. The track was not taken up until the 1980s.

Please park at the given PARKING coordinates. It is the safest and easiest place to reach the Cache from.

The old station has been a private residence for many decades. The cache is along the old trackbed, a well trodden and very popular dog walking route.

You are looking for a small pot, covered in cammo tape, hung in a small ivy covered tree on the West of the path.

We had to move the cache because new Cachers were disturbing the nearby householder. So it's a bit harder to find now.

cache contains log sheets only so BYOP.
