When: Sunday 8 November, 3pm to 5pm
Where: The Sexton's Cottage at the gates of the Northern Cemetery.
Why: This is one of Dunedin's 20th geocaching anniversary gatherings!
What: Afternoon tea and chat. Tea, coffee & fruit juice will be provided.
Feel free to bring a plate for a shared afternoon tea, but there is no obligation to.
We are at Level 1 - Remember to scan the NZ COVID Tracer QR code poster when you arrive!
We're choosing the 8 November because it is the closest weekend to 11 November, the date when the first Mainland geocaches were placed and published.
The first cache published in the South Island is GCAF Mt Cargill - although the first cache placed is GCB0 Flagstaff Hill. Cache owner Nemesis/Donovan says Flagstaff Hill "was indeed my first cache. I placed Mount Cargill later on the same day. Similarly, Unity Park was placed after Botanical Gardens, on the next day. Back in those days Jeremy Irish manually extracted the cache details from an email I sent describing all four caches, and the system he was using strangely assigned the lowest cache number to the final cache entered for each day".
Why hold the event here? Well, the 1872 Sexton's Cottage is the closest available facility to another of Dunedin's cluster of venerable caches, GCB2 Botanical Gardens. For those of you who haven't found that one there will be plenty of time before or after the event!
And also we were here for another event a bit over ten years ago, to celebrate ten years of geocaching. Whom do you recognise amongst this crowd?
GC25HVW 10 Years! Dunedin New Zealand
And a salute to:
GCAF Mt Cargill (11 Nov 2000)
GCB0 Flagstaff (11 Nov 2000)
GCB1 Unity Park (12 Nov 2000)
GCB2 Botanical Gardens (12 Nov 2000)
And whom do you recognise here? [KiwiCampNut was off caching when the photos were taken.]
