On the 22nd of March 1945 an ammunition train exploded at Bootle Station. The driver, Harold Goodhall was killed, and the fireman, Norman Stubbs, was knocked temporarily unconscious. After coming round Mr Stubbs continued to place detonators on the track to warn approaching trains, before driving their engine to Silecroft Station to report the incident. For his actions that evening Mr Stubbs was awarded the George Medal and the Order of Industrial Heroism (worker's V.C.).
