Geocache Description:

17 January 2021, 11:00 - 13:00

On Tuesday 02 May 2000 access to satellites was given to anyone who had a GPS receiver. The next day Dave Ulmer hid a black bucket in the woods of Beavercreek, Oregon and published the coordinates. Within a further three days two people has used their own GPS receivers to locate the stash. Geocaching was born.

Jerry Medlin brought geocaching to Tasmania within a year when he hid GC388 North Tassie in Launceston on Sunday 25 February 2001. In a short time the number of geocachers started to grow and these people joined Jeremy Medlin to become the Pioneers Of Geocaching in Tasmania. The activity has grown enormously in our state over the last nineteen years. The 20th anniversary of the placement of the first geocache is a most appropriate time for us to honour those who fostered the development of geocaching in Tasmania and provided a pathway for all current geocachers.

So we invite all past and current geocachers to a celebratory event

at Legion Park, Esplanade, West Ulverstone

on Sunday 17 January 2021

from 11:00am to 1:00pm

where, through stories and activities, we can learn about the early years and the people who established geocaching in Tasmania and share the company of other geocachers..

Enjoy a BBQ lunch  with sausages, bread, sauces, some salads and a small range of drinks provided. Of course, it would not be a celebration without a cake. Please feel free to bring your own food and drinks if you have special dietry requirements.

The event will be held in the BBQ shelter which will give good protection against the elements if the weather is unkind on the day.
