Details:
We are holding this event at the West Maple Elkhorn River Access near Waterloo at 930am. This location is situated downstream on the east side of the highway bridge & features canoe launching & landing, picnicking, restrooms & parking. This is NOT a full-service recreation area, but the river is a great spot to just informally hang out; therefore, we are keeping the activities very light & simple. Hang out at the river on this early Summer day for a bit & chat with your geofriends.

We'll start with your standard meet & greet. Nothing official or fancy, just mingling & saying hello. We should have a logbook at GZ. Signing is optional, but may allow you to win a small prize drawing (TBD).

Those who WANT to boat/float will need to check in so we have a head count, then start gearing up to leave for the water activity. They will be heading down river then returning to GZ in a couple of hours.

Whether you are a landlubber or a sea dawg, anyone who is at GZ with us during the scheduled hours of this event is eligible to log the event. No participation necessary. It doesn't matter if you boat, help out with transportation, stand there throwing rocks into the river, stop by briefly, or sit around chatting with other cachers for 3 hrs. This will basically be an "open house" for whomever wants to stop by. You may stay a while or come & go as you please. We were told parking & space may be severely limited depending on how many others are sharing the site that day, which is partly why we are planning to "go with the flow" (lol, river humor). If the weather is nice, chances are there will be lots of muggles joining us both on land & on the water.

BRING YOUR OWN lunch, non-alcoholic beverages, & any snacks or picnic toys such as frisbees, ladderball, paddleball, horseshoes, or whatever items you are willing to share. Bring along a lawn chair if you'd like to sit, or you might be able to tailgate. If it's hot out, perhaps bring a few water balloons or squirt guns. We may come up with a few extra things to keep you busy in the area while you're here, but again, it'll be super informal. Other suggested items to have handy are sunscreen, hat, sunglasses, & bug spray.

The event will start wrapping up sometime after noon. All the picnickers & river runners will be rounded up, we'll get all the boats & everything packed, & any stray trash will be CITO'd out.

Note on our chosen D/T rating:
The T rating has been written at a 5 to take into account the optional river activity. Being as those folks will be potentially putting their lives at risk, the least we could do was offer a higher star count. For those who are staying on land, well...we had GZ marked up at the dock, but in an attempt to satiate the powers that be, GZ is now in the water. So, if you truly feel you MUST earn your T5, you are welcome go to the exact "official GZ" coords. Otherwise, just go to the dock.

*Float information (for boaters/floaters only):
The take-out point is Graske Crossing at West Dodge Rd. It takes 18 min round-trip to drive there & back, & has the same amenities as at GZ. If you plan to go on the river, please arrive early to arrange transport. The distance between these two locations is 2.5 River Miles, which is about a two-hour float. Please BYO kayak, canoe, paddle, thick rubber tube, horse tank, water shoes &/or dry bag.

Participation in any water activities is *optional* & entirely AT YOUR OWN RISK.
Rivers can be unpredictable & inherently dangerous, especially after the 2019 floods that brought obstructions (i.e. tree snags & other debris) into this channel. Therefore, ALL participants going in or on the river MUST bring a coast guard-approved life jacket per NRD & state boating regulations.

Bonus content:
Those who boat/float the river may display the below souvenir on their geocaching profile using the html code provided below the animated gif. You did it, woot woot!
