New Zealand
We all know New Zealand has high expectations when it comes to coffee, but how much is New Zealand’s coffee culture actually worth?
Over the last couple of decades, New Zealand has undergone a coffee obsession as many Kiwis have become connoisseurs of their favourite drink.
New Zealand has more roasters per capita than anywhere in the world - and some even argue that New Zealand also has the best coffee in the world.
NZ is ranked the 13 highest consumer of coffee in the world. Higher than the USA and Australia. We drink on average 2.5 cups per week.
52 percent of Kiwis will go out of their way to get a good cup of coffee and both men and woman were guilty of skipping breakfast for a cup of coffee.
Twenty-nine per cent of New Zealanders think they drink more coffee than they should, Gen X leads the coffee consumption stakes at 32 percent compared to 28 percent of Baby Boomers and Gen Ys.
Unsurprisingly, Aucklanders are the most caffeine filled; 15 percent have even admitted to having so many coffees in one day that they haven’t been able to get to sleep. Gen Ys are the most likely age group to have caffeine-induced insomnia (19 percent).
With all this coffee consumption it is not surprising that coffee makes up 90 percent of Fairtrade's retail sales in this country.
On average, Kiwis are spending $13.67 a week on coffee from coffee shops which add up to just over $710 a year.
Southern Cross University has done a scientific study that measured the mathematics of a ‘perfect’ coffee. According to the findings, there are four factors which influence coffee. The Grind, temperature, time and coffee-to-water ratio.
