Viele Wochen lang hatte es in Oberstdorf nicht mehr geregnet. Die Holzhäuser mit ihren Schindeldächern waren strohtrocken. Da hallte in der Nacht zum 6. Mai 1865 der Ruf "Fuirio" durch die Bäckergasse. Zuerst brannte nur ein Haus, doch innerhalb von vier Stunden waren von 316 Häusern 146 abgebrannt. Kirche, Schule, Rathaus, alle Bäckereien und Kaufläden waren in Schutt und Asche gesunken.
Die herbeigeeilten Feuerwehren aus den umliegenden Ortschaften konnten nur noch verhindern, dass der Untere Markt nicht auch noch ein Raub der Flammen wurde. Der damalige Polizist Sanetfried vermutete, dass "allgemeine Fahrlässigkeit" als Ursache in Frage kommen könnte. Der wirkliche Grund für das Feuer ist jedoch nie herausgefunden worden.
Glücklicher Weise forderte die Katastrophe kein Menschenleben, doch 176 Familien wurden obdachlos. Geld- und Sachspenden aus ganz Deutschland halfen, die größte Not zu lindern.
Natürlich ergaben sich aus der Katastrophe auch einige positive Aspekte.
Der Neuaufbau wurde genutzt, um Straßen zu begradigen und großzügiger anzulegen. Die meisten Häuser planten modernere Zimmer für die zu erwartenden "Fremden" ein.
Außerdem ging man jetzt daran die althergebrachten Pflichtfeuerwehr zu einer freiwilligen und schlagkräftigen Feuerwehr umzubauen.

It had not rained for many weeks in Oberstdorf. The wooden houses with their shingle roofs were straw dry. On the night of 6th May 1865 the call "Fuirio" echoed through the Baeckergasse. At first only one house burned, but within four hours 146 of 316 houses had burned down. Church, school, town hall, all bakeries and shops had been reduced to rubble.
The fire brigades from the surrounding villages were hurried to prevent the Lower Market from also becoming a robbery of the flames. The policeman at that time, Sanetfried, suspected that "general negligence" could be a possible cause. However, the real reason for the fire was never found.
Fortunately, the disaster did not claim human lives, but 176 families became homeless. Donations of money and goods from all over Germany helped to alleviate the greatest need.
Of course, the catastrophe also had some positive aspects.
The new construction was used to straighten roads and make them more spacious. Most houses planned more modern rooms for the expected "strangers/tourists".
In addition the traditional compulsory fire brigade was to be converted into a voluntary and powerful fire brigade.
