The Parish Church of St Thomas of Canterbury, Thorverton, is the largest and by far the oldest building in the parish. It overlooks the former Saxon 'burgh' and later market place now known as 'the Berry' or 'Bury'. The Church is dedicated to Thomas Becket, the 12th century archbishop who was murdered in his cathedral church.
Thorverton itself was a Saxon settlement in 900 AD. The church was established in 1170, and the first vicar (Serlo, Richard de Chippestaple) was recorded in 1216.
Between 1450 and 1480 the Church was rebuilt as a Gothic structure with perpendicular tracery windows and was much larger than before to accommodate the growing population. More details of the church can be found here.
